    Urban Explosion in Drylands:
    Causes, Trends and Environmental Planning Responses

    The thrust of the session is to explore pragmatic initiatives (best practices) in environmental planning and design, which enable governments to respond to the numerous challenges of urbanization in arid regions. Presenters are encouraged to touch briefly on:

  • The uniqueness of urbanization in arid regions compared to non-arid regions
  • The major causes of the explosion of cities in arid regions
  • Any discernable trends or patterns in the explosion of cities in arid regions
  • The key challenges of urbanization in arid regions and their implications for people’s quality of life
  • Practical environmental planning initiatives by which governments at the local, national, regional and global levels are addressing the challenges of urbanization
  • Lessons that can be learned and/or shared across the world from the specific initiatives discussed
