Abstract

The need for EIAs has become increasingly important and is now a statutory requirement in many developing countries. Similarly, all major donors require some form of environmental analysis for irrigation and drainage projects. Today EIA is known as one of the most important tools for decision makers in the construction of civil and industrial projects towards sustainable development. Rivers are one of the main sources of water supply for agricultural, industrial and drinking purposes. Therefore, it is important to conserve this resource specially with occurring recent droughts, urban and rural developments. The Gotvand dam is one of the largest dams in Iran with a volume of 4.5 billion m3 and is going to be the last dam on the Karoon River in the south of Iran. In analyzing the environmental resources of watershed basins of region, the available maps together with land uses were employed. Furthermore, in the environmental impact analysis of the dam and its related installations, the combining method of Leopold and ICOLD matrix and overlay technique were used. The aims of the prediction and evaluation stages of the EIA procedure were to identify those activities most likely to occur, and to determine the likely importance of these impacts, be they positive or negative.
